Port Authorities
Association of Icelandic Port Authorities
The Association of Icelandic Port Authorities was founded in 1969 at the instigation of the Association of Local Authorities in Iceland. As ports and their administration constitute a highly specialized field, it was considered appropriate to set up a separate association of port authorities.
The role of the association is to deal with the government and other parties in matters concerning the ports, to increase co-operation between the ports and to work in other ways on matters of common interest, such as the harmonization of regulations and tariffs and the pooling of experience and information. The association has worked on these projects since it was founded.
Each year, the association has made a survey of the finances and financial position of the ports, and the results have been used in negotiations with the government concerning changes in tariffs and port finances. The Ports Committee, which is appointed by the Minister of Transport, consists of two representatives from the association and three nominated by the minister.
The constitution of the association states that each local authorities area that possesses a port or port association may join the association. About a quarter of Iceland's local authorities areas possess and operate ports, and the association now includes 48 ports. The association holds annual general meeting, which are attended by representatives of all the ports belonging to it, at which the committee and chairman are elected.
The association of Icelandic Port Authorities has no permanent staff. Its address is Borgartun 30, Reykjavik, in the premises of the Association of Local Authorities in Iceland.
Enquiries and comments may be sent to the chairman of the Association of Icelandic Port Authorities, Mr. G. Gislason, director of AIP (Associated Icelandic Ports), or to Mr. Magnus Karel Hannesson division manager.
